Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), left Bristol, England in 1497 hoping to find a trade route to Asia, he instead discovered a New Founde Land. He was said to have exclaimed, "Oh Buena Vista" at sighting shore, giving our community it's name. The Town of Bonavista web site has a very detailed history of the person and the events surrounding his voyage of discovery.
